The issue isn’t just about technology’s benefits in education; it’s about ensuring the core values of schooling remain intact. As Car noted, “Artificial intelligence has enormous potential to support teaching and learning, but it should never replace thinking, creativity, and hard work that education is designed to develop.”

The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is a critical milestone for Australian students, with half its result based on school-based assessments. If AI dominates these assessments, the integrity of the entire system could be undermined.

The Slippery Slope of Over-Reliance

A broader concern extends beyond education policy: as AI becomes increasingly ubiquitous in our lives, there’s a creeping sense of complacency about its impact on human skills and abilities. We’ve been told automation would create new job opportunities and improve productivity, but the reality is more complex.

In education policy, ensuring AI augments human learning rather than replaces it is crucial. This means rethinking assessment and evaluation design – prioritizing critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving over technology reliance.

However, this conversation extends far beyond education. As we move forward, we must be mindful of the potential consequences of our choices – for employment, social cohesion, and even our sense of self-worth.

Ultimately, it’s not about whether AI is good or bad; it’s about how we choose to use it – and what values we prioritize in the process. By taking a more nuanced approach to AI, we can avoid over-reliance pitfalls and ensure technology serves humanity, rather than the other way around.
