Canadian schools adopt car-free zones for safer dropoffs

The Bumpy Road to Car Free Schools As students return to class, a growing number of Canadian schools are implementing car free zones at dropoff and pickup times as part of the School Streets initiative.

At least 20 locations have been planned for the 2026 2027 academic year. Implementing these zones is proving to be a complex challenge.

In Mississauga, several schools have tested School Streets in recent years, but concerns about safety, disruption, and resistance from parents who are accustomed to driving their children to school have arisen.
